When I connect the iMac/server to another base station running on my network (in bridge mode), however, I can only initiate playback from iTunes on the server side not the side Remote is connected to. Provided the Apple TV and server are both on the same base station, this works fine. I am running an iTunes music server (iMac running High Sierra) listening to music over Airplay to an Apple TV. Then after playing the music from my iPhone on the Express for a while I try to connect to the same Express from iTunes and then it seems to connect but not play the music until I kill the music streaming on my iPhone. Interestingly, after all the problems connecting using Remote or directly with iTunes, I decided to use my iPhone stream music to the same Express using Airplay to play music on my iPhone. When I try to stream to the Express directly from iTunes (as opposed to the Remote app) I see that after I select the Express router as Airplay output, it displays a message "Express Updating". However, I have seen other errors including "Airport Express requires an Apple Music membership to play this"!! I don't understand this at all! Generally the error says that I cannot connect to the device (the Express). This has worked seamlessly for quite a while.įollowing the recent upgrade to Mojave, on my iMac, when I try to stream the music residing on the iMac to one of the Express routers (AirPlay) from either iTunes or using Apple Remote app from my iPhone (which is effectively the same since remote is controlling the music from the iMac) I get an error! iTunes (and Remote) sees the AirPort Express routers but cannot connect to them! The Express routers are all hard-wired to my network as is the iMac. I have several Apple AirPort Express routers (2nd Generation - running the latest Firmware 7.8.1) which I use to distribute my music. I can stream from iTunes on my iPad 3 to the Denon without issues - again suggesting that the problem is not with the Denon.Ĭan anybody suggest any explanations or, more importantly, solutions for this problem? So.in summary, it seems that AirPlay connection to the Denon RCD-N7 works just fine at the OS level, but not with iTunes. Also, the track information is not available to the Denon using this workaround. That then allows me to play music from the Mac mini to the Denon, although potentially any other sounds that might be generated by the OS would also be relayed to the Denon. This lists "DENON: (AirPlay) as an available device, and it connects successfully. I can work around the problem in a way, by going into the "Sound" pane in System Preferences. I've tried rebooting the Mac, the Denon, the router, and nothing makes any difference. "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "DENON:". The RCD-N7 appears in the speakers list, but when I try to connect the iTunes display shows a "connecting" message, then after a few seconds the following error appears in a pop-up window: I rebuilt the Mac mini to Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, and iTunes 12.3.3.17, which I believe is well before the release of AirPlay 2, but for some reason I still cannot play iTunes through the Denon. This appeared to be because I had inadvertently upgraded the Mac mini to macOS 10.13.6, which includes AirPlay 2, and the Denon is not compatible with AirPlay2. This has worked fine until recently when it suddenly stopped working. For some years, I've been playing my music library from a Mac mini to a Denon RCD-N7, controlled using the Remote app on my iPad.
